Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen! If you weren't in class today, here's what you missed:
Today, we watched clips from CNNs "The Sixties: The Long March to Freedom" which chronicled the events of the early 60s civil rights movement. This video was accompanied by a WORKSHEET. You can access this video in sections on a Youtube playlist, the link to which is posted above. You only need to watch parts 1, 2, 6, and 8 to complete the worksheet, but the full playlist is available there for anyone interested in watching the full 90-minute episode - it's an excellent documentary. After the video, we reviewed the worksheet's answers together.
Unfortunately, we didn't have time during this unit to talk about pop culture. :( However, here is the Powerpoint lecture I was planning to give: "Culture & Counterculture in the 1960s". On the last slide of this Powerpoint, there is a link to CNN's "The Sixties: Sex, Drugs, and Rock n' Roll" which is a great examination of hippie and youth culture in the 60s for all of you pop culture junkies! Enjoy! :)

This lesson contains two pretty impressive speeches from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, both of which were too long to play in class in their entirety, but which I encourage you to listen to if you're particularly interested in civil rights history. I was hoping also to be able to cover the "brown power" (Latino civil rights) and "red power" (Native American rights) movements in this unit, but due to time restrictions, I'll make sure we return to these topics in the next unit.
