We began today's class with a discussion about how you responded to yesterday's Essential Questions Seminar Worksheet.
Next, we distributed the Unit 2 Student Guide, and introduced an exciting new extra-credit opportunity: the "Timebombers Campaign" (come and ask me about this if you were away today!).
After half-time stretch, we watched a few clips from the Steven Spielberg film, "Lincoln". Each student received a "Film Worksheet" that you should complete, along with the QOTD, which is due Monday. Unfortunately, we don't have the time to watch the whole film in class. However, it is available on Netflix and Amazon Prime, and it's a wonderful and very informative film, so I encourage you to watch the whole thing on your own. Those who don't wish to, you only need to watch the following clips in order to complete the worksheet:

Welcome back ladies and gentlemen! I hope that everyone had a good weekend. If you weren't in class today, here's what you missed:
Most classes began by watching the last few clips of "Lincoln" which we didn't have time for during Friday's class. Then, we reviewed the answers to the Film Worksheet together, and had a quick check and discussion about Friday's QOTD (if you were absent today, please email me your response to Friday's QOTD by midnight tonight!)
After half time stretch, we began to examine the first topic in Unit 2: "Reconstruction". Since we didn't finish this lesson in today's class, we'll continue with it tomorrow.

Good morning folks! Sorry I couldn't be with you all today. I'm feeling a bit under the weather today, but I'll most likely be back tomorrow. If you weren't in class today, here's what you missed:
Today, students received the DBQ Essay Assignment: "Who Killed Reconstruction?" Unfortunately, I cannot post this assignment on this website until tomorrow because the documents are on my work computer, but I will post them here first thing tomorrow. I do happen to have the Essay Rubric however (please click the link to download). This assignment is to be completed and handed in by Tuesday October 9. When I return, each student will sign up online for my Turnitin account. When you submit your essay, you should also submit a copy to the Turnitin website.

In today's class, we examined "The Collapse of Reconstruction" which featured the rise of "Jim Crow" laws in the South and the beginning of the "Lost Cause" narrative when glorified the pre-Civil War system of slavery, and distorted the truth about the Civil War and Reconstruction.

Today, we began by reviewing the answers to Friday's WORKSHEET (click on the link in Friday's posting to download this worksheet).
After half-time stretch, students received a reading assignment. We received time during the second half of class to read this text, "Manifest Destiny".This text discusses the West of the pre-Civil War period, and Friday's worksheet discusses the West of the post-Civil War period. You may use the worksheet and this reading to answer the QOTD, which is due tomorrow. Students are also required to respond to comprehension questions 2, 3, 4, and 5 in complete sentences. These questions are due on Thursday.

October 15, 2018: Question of the Day: What impact did the massive influx of immigration have on the United States in the Gilded Age (please give several examples)? (now due Wednesday)
Welcome back ladies and gentlemen! I hope that you all had a good weekend. If you weren't in class today, here's what you missed:
If your class was a little behind, then we began today's class by finishing up Friday's lesson (please see the posting dated for Oct 12). Otherwise, we began by watching two videos. The first one was footage of immigrants arriving at Ellis Island in 1903, and the second one was an Interview with Tyrus Wong. The video illustrated what his experiences at Angel Island were like when he emigrated to the U.S. at 9 years of age.
Finally, students received a reading text entitled: "The New Immigrants" and a WORKSHEET containing terms from the reading which needed to be defined and their historical significance clearly stated. Please use this reading not only to complete the worksheet, but also to help you answer the QOTD. Please do not respond to the comprehension questions on the last page of the reading.

Today was Simulation Day, and we experienced a simplified version of the Ellis Island immigration process. If you were away today, please read the following documents to get a sense of what we did:
During the de-briefing discussion after the simulation, students received a copy of the following "Angel Island Poems". These were found scratched on the walls of the Angel Island Detention Center barracks (or dormitory). These poems could be used as a model for the extra credit extension activity (please click on the document below to view all three possibilities for extra credit).

Today was our Unit 2 review class, so of course, we played "JEOPARDY"! If you were away, please review the attached Powerpoint. Please remember that this review activity is NOT AN EXHAUSTIVE STUDY GUIDE. You must take your cue from the Jeopardy guide, and in your studying process, expand upon the topic areas that appear in the Jeopardy game. Go back to your lectures, worksheets, powerpoints, readings, and QOTDs to study deeply. Just reading the study guide is not enough.

Today we wrote the Unit 2 Test in class. If you were absent for testing, please contact me within the next 48 hours to schedule a make-up test. I will be offering opportunities to take the make-up after school on Monday and Tuesday of next week. You may choose whichever of those two days is more convenient for you.

During the second half of class, we watched the first part of a documentary: ABCs "The Century: America's Time" - Episode 1. We will finish watching during Monday's class. We will discuss the following questions when we finish the film:
